Design of Roll-Off Trailer

My team (of 4) and I  designed a 15000lb capacity roll of trailer on SolidWorks as a part of semester long course deliverable for MEEN 632 - Computer Aided Engineering.

Following requirements were set for the trailer:

CHASSIS:

  • Frame was analyzed for bending at different loading locations of the container placed on the trailer

  • Hinges, pins and shafts were designed for various failure modes  - Shear, tension and bending.

  • The chassis was designed with a fos of 2 on yield strength of the material

Chassis subassembly was designed to have following specs:

  • S8x18.4 - chassis long beams

  • 6x6x0.5 square tubes - bed  frame & chassis cross beams

  • Five - Ø2’’ hinges at bed-frame connection

  • Ø2.5’’ high strength SS pins for cylinder attachment

  • Ramp for loading and unloading operation

Container self locking mechanism

  • A spring loaded self locking mechanism was designed to hold the loaded container in place.

  • When the pin on the face of the container would slide in the cavity, the locking arm will rotate upwards allowing the container pin to sit in its desired place.
